6 Free Compressor Plugins That Absolutely Slap (Audio Demos Inside!).

A simple interface and intuitive controls make Compressor the perfect companion for custom encoding with Final Cut Pro. A sleek interface matches Final Cut Pro and makes it simple to navigate compression projects. Browse encoding settings in the left sidebar, and open the inspector to quickly configure advanced audio and video properties.

Your batch appears in the center, directly below a large viewer that lets you view and navigate your file. Compressor also leverages available hardware encoders for H.

You can also create Destinations, which combine an encode setting with a post-encode action to automate tasks like emailing, copying, and moving files, or executing a custom script. Editors on a inch MacBook Pro can expect workstation-class performance and the ability to transcode between different ProRes formats faster than ever before. With support for a wide range of popular device outputs as well as professional video and audio formats, Compressor expands on the encoding options built into Final Cut Pro.

You can view High Dynamic Range footage on any recent Mac that displays an extended range of brightness, and see the video right in the viewer before starting a batch export. Easily view, adjust, and export closed captions, with the ability to import caption files — even in multiple languages — into a single batch or iTunes Store package.

You can also choose to embed caption metadata in the exported video or deliver a separate sidecar file. The inspector clearly identifies supported Apple devices, and you can modify any preset to get the perfect file for your final delivery.

Or use a custom camera LUT to match a look created on set. Plus, with batch export, you can process hundreds of dailies with just a few easy clicks. Export files for popular video websites, including YouTube, Vimeo, and Facebook. Adjust parameters and choose from a variety of frame rates and resolutions.

Compressor uses optical flow processing to perform format and standards conversions at exceptional quality. You can also take advantage of built-in image filters and tools for audio processing. Generally, this is quite hard to hear. Really it has a subtle effect on the overall character of the compression.

So play with this and trust your ears. Whatever sounds good for your track is the best setting. Attack is an essential parameter to get in and play with, as it controls the length of time before the compressor acts and reduces the level of the input signal. We lose punch and impact if we squash the transients with the rest of the sound. Likewise, Release is the amount of time it takes for the compressor to ease off and stop working each time it hits. To save you the trouble, you can use the Auto release mode, which is a reliable way to ensure that compression is safely applied.

And then of course there are the Mode buttons up top, which change how Compressor processes incoming audio by emulating different classic hardware units. Did you know that the team at Apple spent some serious energy on giving you a great range of compressors in one package with Logic Pro X?

Not only that, but these different compressors each have a unique real-world counterpart that has been painstakingly recreated. Named after an earlier release of Logic Logic Platinum , circa ! Producers tend to use Platinum Digital when they need to make some technical adjustments to the way the level, the attack, or the release of a sound behave.

Tip: Studio VCA comes into its own on an instrument or vocal layer when you push the Threshold down and choose one of the Distortion options. Have a play, and enjoy the warm flavor of this compressor.

Based on its real-world counterpart, the UREI the Studio FET Field-effect Transistor compressor is designed to give you a responsive and punchy attack, as well as providing a bit of nice color to the overall sound. Adjust the threshold, ratio, and attack to find the sweet spot for a layer you want to get the most out of. You hear a cool sound or effect, you like it, and you use it tweaking optional.

Using a Compressor, on the other hand, requires that you know its basic functionality. Just selecting a preset is not an excuse not to do your homework and learn what a Compressor does and how to use it. The good news, it is not rocket science, and there is plenty of educational material on the Internet. Threshold – Ratio – Attack – Release.

Once you understand that basic concept and adjust those parameters, then you are much faster with much better results than stepping through the Compressor Presets in Logic.

Even better, every time you adjust a parameter and listen to what it does to that specific signal, you gain valuable experience that you can apply to your next track or project. Just make sure you understand how the time value Attack and Release relates to the time value of the frequency of the signal. As you can see on the simplified diagram, if the frequency of a Bass signal is Hz, then one full cycle of that waveform takes 10ms.

However, if the Attack time is set to less than 10ms, then the Compressor turns down the amplitude mid-cycle and, therefore, changes the waveform. That means, it create new harmonics, which is another word for distortion.

This is something to avoid, unless you want to create an effect, i. But now you would use the Compressor as an effects processor to change the sound of a signal and not only the volume and the dynamic. One cool feature of Logic’s Compressor is the various “Skins. By selecting one of those seven buttons, the look of the plugin changes to indicate that the Compressor Plugin is emulating a specific vintage Hardware Compressor.

I mentioned earlier that Compressors are not rocket science, but here, it gets a little bit deeper and requires some understanding of electronic circuitry VCA, FET, Opto and how that effects the “sound” or operation of a Compressor. Remember, “with great power comes great responsibility”.

Read up a little about that topic and use your time, experiment on how the same parameters have a different effect on different signals when using those FET, VCA, or Opto based Compressors. Time much better spent, than stepping through Compressor Presets I think. I am reluctant to label any aspect or tool used in audio production as inherently good or bad. I have seen users creatively use relatively poorly developed tools and others hopelessly lost with the best plug-ins and hardware money can buy.

I think the value of Compressor presets ultimately comes down to the user’s experience and knowledge and their willingness to invest some time learning the parameters’ functions. For inexperienced users, the Presets Logic offers can be a trap. They believe they are using compression effectively by applying the appropriately named preset without adjusting any of the parameters to their mix elements.

At the absolute least, the threshold must be adjusted to work effectively with the incoming signal level. I have seen projects with Compressors in place with no threshold at the default 0. In addition to not even triggering the Compressor at all, I have witnessed settings with the default 1. If you are a novice user, the presets are of no use until you understand the basics of the underlying parameters involved.

Nearly anything that can be visualized is visualized; frankly, it is just short of overwhelming. This makes Nova much less intimidating for beginners, who will be able to intuitively figure out what it is doing to their audio with sight alone.

TDR deserves major props for going the extra mile on the design elements. Two bands would be sufficient for most sound sources, and more bands can then be engaged from there if the sound is active in many frequency ranges.

The Freecomp is a great compressor option but its good to know the option for the full suite is there if you need it. The plugin is designed for use on groups and so is great for the mastering process or sculpting a little more character into your bus tracks. The Freecomp features DCAM circuit modeling technology and comes with a simple-to-use interface with standard compressor parameters and is effective at adding coloration to your sound.

This compressor plugin will also be suited to those searching for more extreme compression pumping sounds, particularly producers who focus on EDM. The parameters can be cranked to the extreme to give that favored ducking effect. If the Freecomp is up your street then you can upgrade tot the paid suite of compressors which include transient shapers and a limiter. Download Freecomp here.

While some plugins may seem overly simplistic due to a lack of parameters, this is deceptive thinking. Because compressors react very particularly to the volume of the incoming audio, it is highly encouraged that you play around with levels when using plugins with limited controls. Volume in this context can be seen as an extra parameter, and indeed the most important one regarding compression. Because each plugin in this list has its own particular advantages and disadvantages in different situations, the safest bet is to grab the whole lot and figure out when and how to use them simply by experimenting and building familiarity.

After all, they are free, so what do you have to lose? Interviews See All. Is Tape Undergoing A Renaissance?
